Transition from synchronous to asynchronous superfluid phase slippage in an aperture array

چکیده
We have investigated the dynamics of superfluid phase slippage in an array of apertures. The magnitude of the dissipative phase slips shows that they occur simultaneously in all the apertures when the temperature is near T!−T#10 mK and subsequently lose their simultaneity as the temperature is lowered. We describe three experiments to probe the mechanisms underlying the synchronous behavior. The results raise fundamental questions about the dynamics of phase slippage in a multiply connected geometry.

Simulations of Phase Slippage in an Aperture Array
To understand the origins of synchronous and asynchronous phase slippages observed in an array of apertures connecting two reservoirs of superfluid 4He, we have investigated the role of thermal fluctuations in the critical velocity and the possible effects of having an array rather than a single aperture through several model simulations. The results are compared with recent experiments carried...
متن کاملQuantum coherence in a superfluid Josephson junction.
We report a new kind of experiment in which we take an array of nanoscale apertures that form a superfluid (4)He Josephson junction and apply quantum phase gradients directly along the array. We observe collective coherent behaviors from aperture elements, leading to quantum interference. Connections to superconducting and Bose-Einstein condensate Josephson junctions as well as phase coherence ...
متن کاملFabricating nanoscale aperture arrays for superfluid helium-4 weak link experiments
Arrays of nanoscale apertures have been found to exhibit fascinating quantum phenomena such as the Josephson effect and collective quantized phase-slippage. To be in the Josephson regime, the aperture size must be comparable to the healing length of the He order parameter. For 50nm apertures this regime is attained ∼mK below Tλ. Collective phase slippage occurs at considerably lower temperature...
متن کاملPhase-Slip Avalanches in the Superflow of 4He through Arrays of Nanosize Apertures
In response to recent experiments by the Berkeley group, we construct a model of superflow through an array of nanosize apertures that incorporates two basic ingredients: (1) disorder associated with each aperture having its own random critical velocity, and (2) effective interaperture coupling, mediated through the bulk superfluid. As the disorder becomes weak there is a transition from a regi...
متن کاملSuperfluid 4 He interferometer operating near 2 K
We report the observation of quantum interference in superfluid He. The interferometer, an analog of a dc-superconducting quantum interference device SQUID , employs a recently reported phenomenon wherein superfluid He exhibits Josephson frequency oscillations in an array of submicron apertures. An interference pattern is generated by reorienting the loop of the superfluid “SQUID” with respect ...
